Making sweet music with HCCC!
Thinking In Full Color is partnering with Hudson County Community College in Jersey City for a free concert kicking off Women's History Month!
See IFC alumna and jazz chanteuse Audrey Martells and her husband Belden Bullock on bass on Friday, March 1, the official closing for HCCC's current exhibition "Notes and Tones," part of JC Fridays.
Audrey made headlines all across Europe with her critically acclaimed tour in 2018. She thrilled audiences with her original music in Austria, Germany, France, Poland and the Czech Republic. Audrey has built a successful career as a songwriter for such gifted legends like George Benson and Randy Crawford. She has written and worked with many wonderful artists like Whitney Houston, Jewel, Britney Spears, Joan Osborne, Steven Van Zandt among many others. Audrey effortlessly blends jazz, funk and R&B paying homage to the beauty of old and new classics with her own exquisite soulful interpretation.
Jazz bassist Belden is a proud graduate of Berklee College of Music. He hails from Boston but has traveled the world with many legends of jazz. Belden has just returned from an exciting tour in Russia. He’s been busy sharing his amazing talents with audiences for decades and has been honored to tour and perform with Abdullah Ibrahim, Roy Haynes, George Adams, Ahmed Jamal, Oliver Lake, Andrew Hill, Grady Tate, Ralph Peterson, Jay Hoggard, Melba More and Branford Marsalis among many many others.
Belden and Audrey come together in the heart of the song with a transparent and engaging duo they call “Two Sides of A Story.” They blend jazz classics and pop as well as R&B mashups bringing an original, sensual and intoxicating spin to cover songs and their own original compositions.
The duo will perform while guests get one last look at "Notes and Tones," a themed compilation of prints created by nationally recognized artists who have worked over the years with the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in Manhattan. Blackburn, a jazz aficionado, held similar ideologies to the local Jazz communities of the late 1960s. This indie spirit glistens through the jazz-inspired works that will be on view.
The closing reception is on Friday, March 1 from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Dineen Hull Gallery, 71 Sip Ave., Jersey City, N.J. at Hudson County Community College. (Accessible by Journal Square PATH). Audrey and Belden perform at 6 pm. Admission is free!
